Ninja warriors among funding winners

Sunraysia Residential Services Inc received $10,000 to build a ninja warrior circuit.

A NINJA warrior circuit, community garden and cultural martial arts classes were among the 31 projects funded in the newest round of Mildura Council's Community Grants Program.

Clubs and organisations have shared in more than $200,000 to support cultural events, environmental sustainability initiatives, equipment purchases and community-based projects.

Community development portfolio councillor Helen Healy said the program provided opportunities for not-for-profit community groups to deliver innovative local projects and programs that support Council’s vision of "making this the most liveable, people-friendly community in Australia”.

The grants ranged from $1800 to $10,000.

"These groups do such important, valuable work in our communities," she said.

"From providing opportunities for people to connect and participate, to supporting access, equity and social inclusion, environmental sustainability and the arts, there are some fantastic projects that Council is proud to give a funding boost."

The 31 successful applicants include the Irymple Croatian Senior Citizens Club, which will put a $6000 grant towards digitising local historical data, and the Cowangie Cemetery Trust, which will use the grant to help purchase a new ride-on lawn mower.

Cabarita Community Inc will invest its $10,000 grant in upgrades to the community centre at Cabarita, a building which was formerly used by a sailing club.

The Psyche Bend Historical Reserve committee also received $10,000 to provide safe access to Psyche pumps and Sunraysia Residential Services Inc received $10,000 to build a ninja warrior circuit at its Benetook Farm.

Ouyen's Roxy Theatre will soon establish a new community garden after receiving $6000 and First Nations and Torres Strait Islander Jiu Jitsu Inc received $6000 for cultural martial arts classes.

All grant applications were assessed by an independent panel using set criteria before being officially endorsed by Councillors at the October Ordinary Council Meeting.

A full list of grant recipients can be found on council's website.
