Clear the way for Billie-Joe’s dream

BILLIE-Joe Dummpercy will gain a new sense of independence when she moves into one of two custom-built homes in central Mildura.

Two old houses adjacent to Aldi on Fifteenth St were demolished this week to make way for the construction of two units by local not-for-profit service Sunraysia Residential Services, which provides aged care, disability and accommodation support.

SRS services manager Nathan Swaeney said the custom-built unit would meet all of Billie-Joe's needs and make life easier.

She has an intellectual disability and achondroplasia, which impairs the growth of bones in her limbs.

"She has had a lot of input (on the design)," Mr Swaeney said.

"Pretty much everything we have put back onto to BJ to make it feel like it really is her home, which it is going to be. It will fit her needs and wants."

Billie-Joe said she was excited to have her own custom-built home. "It will improve my life," she said.

"Now I do the dishes a lot at home and the washing up, so it will be down to my level. It will just help me out."

The unit will have a swimming pool, car parking and a step-in bath.

Mr Swaeney said the project had been a long process, but he was glad Billie-Joe could finally see something happening at the site.

"For us, it is the first time that we have been able to really do a robust custom home from scratch," he said.

"It is something that has taken a lot of planning and documentation.

"We have had to send away to make sure it meets the standards of the NDIS and STA specialists, disability accommodation needs, but also it is fit for purpose for Billie-Joe.

"It has been a really big process but good learning for everyone involved and it is just good to see that Billie-Joe is going to reap the rewards of all the hard work everyone has put in.

"To see a smile on her face at the end of the day when she has the opportunity get her own home that is fit for her, that is what everyone will be happy about."

Mr Swaeney hoped the build would be completed by next year.

Both houses are being built to the SDA robust design category standard, which states that the housing needs to be designed to incorporate a reasonable level of physical access provision and be very resilient, reducing the likelihood of reactive maintenance and reducing the risk to the participant and the community.

The project has been fully funded by SRS from donations given over the past few years and the homes are being built by Garraway Developments.

Expressions of interest are welcome from potential occupants for the second home.

The next fundraising event is being held at the Pizza Cafe on November 15 and proceeds will assist with the construction of buildings, such as this one.
